RSF Launches Drone Attacks on Sudan's Khartoum
(MENAFN) The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a fresh round of drone attacks on Sudan's Khartoum International Airport Thursday, marking the third consecutive day of strikes on the key facility.
According to local media, local witnesses reported that seven drones targeted the airport and surrounding areas in the southern part of the capital, sparking widespread panic among residents. Explosions were heard around the airport complex during the assault, the outlet added.
The RSF's offensive against the airport and other critical sites in Khartoum began on Tuesday, just one day before the airport was scheduled to resume operations after being shut down for more than two years. Wednesday saw the airport's first civilian flight since the reopening.
Despite the series of attacks, security sources told media that no significant damage had occurred at the airport. However, experts suggest the escalating drone strikes signal a shift in the conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese military — moving from direct ground combat to the use of drones as a means of both military pressure and political leverage.
The RSF has yet to comment on the reports.
Since fighting erupted in April 2023, the war has claimed over 20,000 lives and displaced 14 million people, according to the UN and local officials.
