Sudanese army chief announces army retreat from El-Fasher
In a televised address, al-Burhan explained that commanders on the ground assessed the worsening situation and concluded that withdrawing was the only way to avert more civilian suffering.
“Everyone is following what happened in El-Fasher,” said Burhan.
“The leadership there, including the security committee, concluded that they must leave the city because of the systematic destruction and killing of civilians,” he added.
He stated that local commanders proposed the retreat, which was later endorsed by the military’s top leadership “to relocate to a safe area and spare the remaining citizens and the city from further devastation.”
“This is one of the phases of military operations imposed on us as Sudanese people,” he said. “We always repeat that the Sudanese people will prevail, and the Sudanese Armed Forces will triumph.”
The RSF has not yet issued a response to al-Burhan’s statements.
Intense fighting continued in El-Fasher on Sunday, a city that serves as a crucial humanitarian hub for all five Darfur states. The RSF has reportedly besieged the city since May 10, 2024, surrounding it from multiple directions as part of an offensive aimed at seizing control of the area.
Hostilities between the Sudanese army and the RSF have persisted since April 2023, resulting in thousands of deaths and forcing millions to flee their homes.
